Maldives president predicts 'successful' visit to India

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has predicted that his state visit to India will be a “successful” one, where bilateral relations between both nations are further strengthened.

Speaking to the media before departing on his maiden state visit since assuming office last month, the president noted that he was visiting India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The prime minister had made a special appearance at Solih’s inauguration ceremony on November 17, with both parties meeting afterwards.

Noting that India was one of the first nations to establish bilateral ties with the Maldives, President Solih that Maldives will always be “grateful” to its contributions for the country’s development.

The president added that he has no doubt that the neighboring country “will continue to provide assistance in the future” as well.

While he is to meet with PM Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday, President Solih stated that discussions will focus on strengthening the existing ties between both nations.

Noting that both countries are to sign agreements during his three-day visit, he highlighted that this includes a visa agreement to ease difficulties faced by Maldivians.

He added that discussions will also be reviewing the health sector, and security and defence matters, as well as receiving budgetary support from India.

President Solih emphasized that the “most important task” for the trip is to meet with Maldivians residing in India, adding that he will be listening to their various concerns and seeking ways to better their lives there.

While President Solih is to depart to India on Sunday, he will return on Tuesday.
