The President’s Office has on Thursday opened complaint submission for those who have been “detained, criminally charged, or sentenced” to gain political motives, since 1st February 2012.

Complaint submission is open for 30 days, from December 6.

The President’s Office noted that releasing those “detained, criminally charged or sentenced to gain political motives” was a major electoral pledge of incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

While a number of high-profile prisoners had been released after September’s presidential elections, prior to President Solih assuming office, he established the “Committee on Releasing Political Detainees” on the first day of his presidential term.

A bill proposing to give more powers to these two commissions was submitted to parliament earlier this week. While the parliament voted to accept the bill, former ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s MPs had protested against it in parliament.
