United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt has revealed the UK’s intention to open a new Embassy in the Maldives.
Hunt revealed this via Twitter on Tuesday evening.
In his tweet, the Foreign Secretary wrote that he is “delighted” to announce the decision.
Highlighting that over 100,000 British people visit every year, Hunt stated that this will help both countries to work together “even more closely”.

Furthermore, Hunt stated that he is proud to continue the biggest expansion of UK’s Foreign and commonwealth Office’s diplomatic network for a generation.
The decision to open a new Embassy was reached as part of the country’s strategy to expand and enhance their foreign policies across the globe by establishing their Embassies worldwide.
With the announcement, Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid had welcomed the decision.
As such, Shahid took to twitter, shortly after Hunt’s tweet, expressing that this marks a significant milestone in the relationship of both countries.

Minister Shahid wrote on behalf of the government of Maldives that the country looks forward to strengthened opportunities for sectors such as education, trade tourism and investment for both countries.
UK’s current embassy to the Maldives Is located in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
