Parliamentary Elections 2019: MDP to compete in all 87 constituencies

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to compete in all 87 constituencies in next year’s parliamentary elections.
The decision was made at the party’s 169th national council meeting on Saturday night.
MDP leader, former President Mohamed Nasheed had proposed to compete in all 87 constituencies, after council members voiced concerns over a previous proposal.
Nasheed had previously proposed for the party to compete in areas agreed by the ruling coalition.
However, most of the council members rejected this and had instead proposed to compete in all constituencies “if the four leaders in the ruling coalition are not able to come to an agreement”.
The ruling coalition comprises of MDP, Jumhooree Party (JP), Adhaalath Party (AP) and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM).
While MDP has made the decision to contest in all constituencies, the ruling coalition had agreed to work together in the upcoming parliamentary elections; which are to be held in March 2019.
