While Supreme Court has banned RaajjeTV from covering court hearings alleging ‘contempt of court’, Maldives Broadcasting Commission says otherwise.
While a complaint was submitted to the Commission, accusing the station’s morning show ‘Fashaairu’ of violating contempt of court regulations, it has concluded that the station has not violated any regulations.
While the content in question was aired on October 31, the complaint noted that remarks made by the show’s hosts were “contemptuous of judges, especially the Supreme Court and Supreme Court justices, and demeaning to the honour and dignity of the whole judiciary.”
Concluding the investigation into the matter, MBC ruled that the hosts remarks had not violated the broadcasting code of practice.
While MBC comprises of seven members, majority of those who took part in the meeting voted in favor of the station.
Despite the Commission doing so, Supreme Court continues to investigate the matter, and RaajjeTV has been banned from covering court hearings in the meantime.
Since the introduction of the anti-defamation law in 2016, Maldives Broadcasting Commission has fined RaajjeTV a total of four times, totaling to MVR 3.7 million. Parliament on Wednesday passed to repeal the law.
