Faafu Atoll sale
RaajjeTV to open bureau in Faafu Atoll
The station is to open a temporary bureau in the atoll
Reports of a possible sale of the atoll to Saudi Arabia has the public concerned

Raajje Television has decided to open up a temporary bureau in Faafu Atoll, amid reports of the entire atoll being sold to Saudi Arabia.

The station’s Chief Operating Officer, Hussain Fiyaz Moosa said that the reason for opening up a bureau there is because of the imminent sale, adding that RaajjeTV wants to ensure that the public is well-informed on the matter.

Right now, the whole nation is concerned over the possible sale of Faafu Atoll. This the first time that any administration is attempting to sell land like this. So, as a station dedicated to news and current affairs, we want the people to know everything there is to know on the matter. To tell them the advantages and disadvantages of this,” said Fiyaz.

While a RaajjeTV crew visited various islands in Faafu Atoll this past weekend, the station’s journalists received death threats prior to their departure on Thursday, via the station’s main telephone line. Maldives Police Service (MPS) is currently investigating the matter.

Fiyaz noted that the small team at RaajjeTV has faced a number of obstacles, as well as dangers, in its six years of service.

However, the station remains committed in its work, and will move forward in keeping the public informed, despite such threats,” said Fiyaz.

As reports of the sale of Faafu Atoll to Saudi Arabia increased, President Abdulla Yameen denied that his administration has made any such deals, claiming that they are negotiating a “development deal worth USD 10 billion."
