Opposition lawmakers speak to the press after submitting no-confidence motion against Speaker Abdulla Maseeh
Lawmakers of the Joint Opposition have called for the resignation of Speaker Abdulla Maseeh, after submitting the fourth no-confidence motion against him.
Speaking to the media after submitting the motion to parliament on Wednesday, Kinbidhoo constituency MP Abdulla Riyaz said that ‘resigning would be the best option for Maseeh at this point’.
“Even today, I respectfully call upon Maseeh to resign from the post of parliament speaker. To allow room for parliament proceedings to commence. There is a lot of work to be done,” said Riyaz.
Meedhoo constituency MP Rozaina Adam made the same appeal, adding that him remaining in the position ‘is an embarrassment’.
Noting that previous no-confidence motions were submitted with at least 45 signatures, she highlighted that Wednesday’s motion was signed with the support of 51 out of 85 lawmakers.
“Hence, we hope that the matter will be put on the agenda as soon as possible,” she added.
MP Rozaina added that Maseeh has remained in the position, despite the multiple no-confidence motions against him, because of the government’s ‘influence and power’.
On Tuesday night, reports surfaced that Maseeh has decided to resign. However, RaajjeMV has been unable to obtain a confirmation from him, and he is yet to submit an official resignation letter to the parliament administration.
