HRCM heads to Dhoonidhoo, to monitor conditions during detention
HRCM's National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) went to the custodial center on Sunday

Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has visited Dhoonidhoo Police Custodial to monitor the facilities and conditions during police detention.

HRCM said that officials from its National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) went to the custodial center on Sunday, to monitor the conditions of detainees and employees, as well as to check whether there is any ill-treatment and torture during detention and to ensure that detainees are being provided all rights guaranteed to them under the Constitution.

While the Commission did not disclose details of its findings, it is to compose a report of the visit which is to be sent to Dhoonidhoo Police Custodial and the Maldives Police Service, as well as other relevant institutions.

However, HRCM said that it will be asking the institutions to make certain amendments to better the facilities and conditions in the custodial center, and that they will be asked to send follow-ups of the work to implement these changes via writing ‘twice a year’.
