Former Chief Justice Ahmed Faiz Hussain has said that trust in the Supreme Court’s judgement has been established after it refused to hear testimonies of secret witnesses in the case to annul the presidential election result.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday concluded the last hearing of outgoing President Abdulla Yameen’s case after deciding not to hear secret witnesses presented by the plaintiff.

In a Facebook post after the hearing, the former chief justice said that refusal to hear secret witnesses is progress when it comes to the Maldives justice system.

Faiz said that he had even been against nullifying the 2013 presidential election and that one of the reasons was that he does not believe that an election can be annulled on the weight of secret testimonies.

He goes on to say that even Islam discourages the use of secret witnesses.

As a judge in 2013, Faiz ruled not to annul that year’s presidential election as requested by a Supreme Court case.
