Elections Commission (EC) has decided to sue those accusing authorities of vote rigging and penalize TV channels that broadcast such news.

The commission members, four of whom are currently in Sri Lanka, made the decision in a meeting held on Sunday via video conference.

Commission chief Ahmed Shareef confirmed to RaajjeMV that they were willing to sue those accusing it of vote rigging and file complaints to the broadcasting commission against TV channels that broadcast such news.

Highlighting that the accusations against the Elections Commission are being made at the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) office, Shareef said that they have sent a letter to PPM asking if the gathering is being organized by the party.

President Abdulla Yameen initially conceded defeat at the presidential election to the opposition candidate but later began accusing the Elections Commission of rigging the election.

His supporters have since been gathering outside the PPM headquarters and making speeches that defame the EC members. Their protests are being aired live by some TV channels.
