President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that he is not interested in making any ‘deals’ with outgoing President Abdulla Yameen.

He made the statement while speaking to the press after a meeting with former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom on Tuesday, where he criticized the sitting president’s decision to take to the streets on Monday night despite having accepted the results of the 2018 presidential election.

According to final results announced by the Elections Commission on Saturday, Solih won against Yameen with 58.4 percent of the votes.

Noting that there have been reports that Yameen is seeking a way to save himself from the repercussions of his various unlawful activities, the President-elect assured that he will not allow anyone to act against the law.

While there have been multiple corruption and rights abuses against Yameen, Al Jazeera on Tuesday reported details of a money-laundering case filed at the police by the central bank’s Financial Intelligence Unit in mid-September.

Referring to this, Solih stated that the country’s independent institutions must investigate allegations against all and added that no one is above the law.

“We have no intention of making any unlawful deals. We will follow the Constitution and the country’s laws. And, the people’s decision. We will uphold this, and have no intention of seeking a solution through a deal,” said the President-elect.

Supporting Solih, Maldives’ longest serving leader Gayoom added that a coalition government ‘will always act within the law’. Further noting that the best thing for the country ‘will be to accept the people’s decision’, he called on his half-brother Yameen to ‘step aside’.
