President Abdulla Yameen’s pledge to allocate plots of land to Thoddoo island’s residents is an attempt to deceive them, a member of the Alif Alif atoll’s local government council has said.

Hassan Abdulla, vice president of the Thoddoo council, said that after swearing to allocate 82 plots of land during a campaign speech in the island, the government had authorized it Monday afternoon in time for the incumbent president's visit to the island.

Hassan said that prior to this, the government had thwarted council's attempts to do the same and refused to grant permission when they took initiative to relieve the island’s housing issues.

The council member described this as an attempt to deceive the island’s masses and denounced it as a ‘lowly and pathetic’ act, inspired by self-interest.

Further, Hassan also said that President Yameen’s recent pledge to develop the island’s harbour is baseless and hollow, as it’s a project for which the budget and plans have been finalized without reaching fruition.

The harbour development project was the result of President Yameen’s 2013 campaign and it has yet to be initiated adequately. Hassan said that making the same pledge twice without following through shows disrespect to the island’s people.

Hassan also took target at President Yameen over his administration’s unfulfilled pledge to develop a futsal stadium in Thoddoo and to develop the island’s roads.

President Yameen has been assuring citizens of continual progress under his leadership, with his campaign for re-election officially being called ‘Progress Shared’, with the presidential ballots being slated for 23rd of September.
