The suspects arrested for damaging a campaign site in GA. Kolamaafushi have been remanded for 15 days.

RaajjeMV understands that they were remanded at a closed-door court hearing without being given legal representation.

They have been charged with terrorism and are being kept at the Villingili police station.

Their arrest order released by the GA. Villingili magistrate court stated that they have been accused of disturbing the peace, assault, and damage to property in Kolamaafushi at 6pm on August 29 and is to be arrested due to the risk of them influencing witness testimonies and due to security risks.

Ruling party supporters had decorated Kolamaafushi with their posters and flags after Joint Opposition presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced he would be visiting the island. Supporters of both sides were injured in the confrontation that followed.

Posters and flags of the Joint Opposition are usually taken down prior to President Abdulla Yameen’s arrival to an island and candidate Solih was almost assaulted during a campaign trip to Hulhumale’. While videos of the incident have been publicized, the police are yet to arrest anyone.
