One of the detainees of the 2015 May Day protest have been hospitalized due to a deteriorating health condition.

26-year-old Ibrahim Rasheed was arrested on the allegations of attacking a police officer that day.

He was hospitalized after his condition became 'serious', and his family told RaajjeMV that he is being kept in isolation at the hospital.

His family said that he looked weak, adding that his body was covered blisters.

However, they were not able to confirm his condition due to failure to meet with his doctor.

While the family had requested for a family member to be by Ibrahim Rasheed's side during his stay in hospital, they were informed that it can only be done after the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) Medical Board grants permission "which can only be done after Eid holidays". All state offices are closed for a period of nine days for the Eid al-Adha holiday.

He was charged with hitting a police officer with a mobile phone, after seeing the officer fall to the ground.

Back in May, Ibrahim Rasheed's attorney Nazim Abdul Sattar had expressed concern over his deteriorating health condition, highlighting that his condition was yet to be diagnosed.

While Ibrahim Rasheed has been hospitalized, another May Day detainee, Abdulla Rasheed, passed away while under incarceration last October.

The 51-year-old was serving a five-year sentence on assault charges. The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and National Integrity Commission had launched separate investigations into his death.

The 2015 May Day protest was the largest the country has seen, with around 25,000 people turning out for the rally in capital Malé City.
