Opposition parliamentarians have requested to summon Defence Minister Adam Shareef to the Committee on National Security following his social media post regarding threats to national security.
A letter was sent to the Committee's chair, Kendhikulhudhoo constituency MP Ali Mauroof and signed by four prominent lawmakers- Mahchangoalhi-North constituency MP Mariya Didi, Galolhu-North constituency MP Eva Abdulla, Makunudhoo constituency MP Anara Naeem and Hithadhoo-Central constituency MP Ibrahim Mohamed Didi- on Monday.
It noted that the defence minister had, via his Facebook page, announced that the country's military and police are on high alert due to reports of plots to create unrest and that they are closely monitoring the situation.
Calling this 'highly irresponsible', the four lawmakers requested to summon him to the Committee on National Security as per Article 10 of the Armed Forces Act and Article 123 of the Peoples Majlis Act.
The minister's decision to announce such a serious matter on social media was received by immense public backlash.
