Naseem said Adeeb must not be deprived from the rights guaranteed to him
Thursday marks the 1000th day since Adeeb has been kept under solitary confinement

Opposition coalition’s Presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s running mate for the September election, Faisal Naseem has said that medical care must be ensured to jailed former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.

Marking the 1000th day since Adeeb has been kept in solitary confinement, Faisal took to twitter on Thursday evening, writing that having kept the former VP in solitary confinement, depriving him from his basic rights for such a long period is a worrying matter.

Running-mate Naseem further wrote that Adeeb must not be deprived from the rights guaranteed to him under civil liberties and dignity.

A separate tweet posted by the former VP’s legal representative Moosa Siraj reads that his client is the most mentally strong person he has met thus far. Siraj further wrote that the whole state had deliberately infringed on the rights guaranteed to Adeeb, adding that everyone behind this prejudice must be brought before justice.

The jailed former VP has diagnosed with and suffering from Glaucoma since he began serving prison sentences totaling up to 33 years. Adeeb’s eyesight is observed to be deteriorating and since there was a long delay with lawyers not being able to meet him, they are unable to get the necessary information from him to seek medical treatment as soon as possible. Adeeb himself had requested authorities to allow him proper medical care before he goes completely blind.

Adeeb and his family have continually said that his peripheral vision has significantly worsened and that while there are no legal barriers holding him from travelling abroad to seek proper treatment, the government is preventing it with incumbent President Abdulla Yameen declaring that he will not be granted permission to travel abroad until he returns the money he allegedly embezzled from state funds.

The former VP was jailed in October 2015 and is serving a sentence totaling 33 years in incarceration under several allegations, with several other charges pending against him.
