The UN has repeatedly called on the government and opposition to hold dialogue, even offering to be a mediator, in order to resolve the issues within the country.
UNDPA team is in the Maldives for the second time in less than six months. The department plays a central role in the efforts to prevent and resolve conflict around the world.
President Abdulla Yameen has recently said that he expects the European Union (EU) to take action against the Maldives this month and that the government will uphold its policies despite such a threat.
President Yameen said that the EU officials have only been listening to the opposition and calling for the release of political prisoners.
