Not long after an attempted attack on opposition's presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, his campaign team was attacked with engine oil.
Two men targeted Solih as the team arrived in Hulhumalé on Tuesday evening, as part of his door-to-door campaign in the capital.
Later, engine oil filled-packets were thrown directly at them as they were leaving the Coralville Apartments in Hulhumalé. Solih was once again safe from the attack, with senior opposition officials bearing the brunt of the attack.
While the perpetrators are yet to be arrested or identified, in both attacks, Home Minister Azleen Ahmed had earlier condemned the attempted attack on the opposition presidential candidate.
In addition to the campaign team, journalists and media crew covering the door-to-door campaign event were attacked with the oil as well.
MDP accused government officials of being behind the attacks, adding that such acts show that President Abdulla Yameen has already lost the election.
In addition, MP Solih said that the incumbent President is resorting to such tactics "as he knows that he will not win through a free and fair election".
