Opposition Maldivian Democraatic Party (MDP)’s presidential candidate, MP Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that he will “always be here for the people”.

Speaking to congress members of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) after being elected as the party’s candidate for the presidential election, Solih said that he will “never be anyone’s slave” and that he will always work “for the people”.

However, he said that he still “wishes to see the day” former President Mohamed Nasheed is elected as President. Noting that he will continue to do everything he can to achieve this, MP Solih added, “that is what the people want”.

He said that he wants to be able to work for the betterment of the nation, and that this can only be attained by “working together”.

The Hinnavaru constituency MP said that he can work with people with different political opinions, adding that “things can only be resolved by compromising”.

“This country needs peace and serenity. We hope to bring that,” Solih said.

MP Solih, who has served in the People’s Majlis for over 25 years, was elected as MDP’s presidential candidate its third national congress held in Alid Alif Ukulhas on Saturday, with 791 congressmen voting in favor.

MDP is part of the Joint Opposition, along with Jumhooree Party, Adhaalath Party and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s faction of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

The opposition parties have agreed to put forward a common candidate for the presidential elections slated for September 23; an MDP presidential candidate and JP running mate.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed actually won the party ticket at the primary election held on May 30, but decided to withdraw due to the Elections Commission’s “unfair” demands.
