President Yameen is ‘scared and alone’: MP Shahid
Yameen's isolation is obvious in that he has been prosecuting anyone that he sees to be a threat, Shahid said

Shahid said that parliamentarians are legal representatives of the people and therefore cannot be disposed of in any manner ‘they see fit’

President Abdulla Yameen has isolated all his allies and the political situation in the Maldives has left him ‘scared  and alone’, says MP Abdulla Shahid.

MP Shahid, the parliamentary representative for the North Henveiru constituency who previously served as parliament speaker as well, said this while speaking at the opposition rally on Tuesday night.

In his address at the rally, held at the Jumhooree Party’s headquarters Kunooz, Shahid said that Yameen's isolation is obvious in that he has been prosecuting anyone that he sees to be a threat.

In this regard, the veteran politician said that human rights defenders and lawmakers that stand against the government are prosecuted without cause.

Shahid also spoke about ‘mass corruption’ amongst the government agencies and accused the Yameen administration of stealing from the Maldivian people.

In reference to Tuesday night’s Supreme Court ruling on floor-crossing, Shahid said that parliamentarians are legal representatives of the people and therefore cannot be disposed of in any manner ‘they see fit’.

While the anti-defection bill is welcomed by a number of Maldivians, according to the census expressed on social networking platforms, the date to which it is backdated to take effect is July of last year.

This date has instigated allegations against the state of selectively passing the bill to penalize lawmakers that have since aligned themselves against the government.
