Ambassador Shiaan warns against relying on foreign powers
EU on Monday called on Maldivian authorities to lift the state of emergency
Shiyan said relying on foreign powers to settle even the smallest of internal matters would only bring harm to the country
Shiyan said the EU is unlikely to do anything regarding the Maldives political situation

The biggest problem in Maldives is believing that the international community should solve internal problems, says Maldivian Ambassador to the European Union (EU) Ahmed Shiyan.

Ambassador Shiyan said this in an interview with RaajjeTV after the EU on Monday called on Maldivian authorities to lift the state of emergency or face “targeted measures” on government officials.

In the interview with RaajjeTV, Shiyan said relying on foreign powers to settle even the smallest of internal matters would only bring harm to the country, as those powers would also ask for something in return.

He noted that opinion on the EU ruling has been divided, and that the Maldives government will be conveying the necessary information on its situation to the EU member states.

The EU is not an oppressive force that imposes itself on other countries, Shiyan assured, adding that since the EU has also avoided taking action against Myanmar during the Rohingya crisis, it is unlikely that it would do anything regarding the Maldives political situation.
