The United States government’s bureau of consular affairs has released a travel advisory on the Maldives, asking travelers to be cautious of terrorism in the country.
An update to the existing advisory was made on January 10th, to include a line cautioning travelers in Maldives 'due to terrorism’.
“Terrorist groups may conduct attacks with little or no warning…attacks may occur on remote islands which could lengthen the response time of authorities” the advisory says.
The department has four ‘travel advisory levels’: the first level advises travelers to exercise normal precautions, the second to exercise increased caution, third to reconsider travel, and the fourth and final which states ‘Do not travel’.
Maldives has now been placed on the second level, and American citizens that travel to the country have been asked to be vary when travelling to locations that are crowded or often used by ‘Westerners’.
