Qasim yet to undergo required surgeries, still not allowed to fly: lawyer

Doctors yet to give Jumhooree Party (JP)leader Qasim Ibrahim the go ahead to fly, says his legal team.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, lawyer Noorul Salaam Aboobakur said that the Maamigilli constituency MP's condition "has not improved" and that he is yet to undergo the required surgeries.
"Hence doctors have not given him the permission to fly back," said Aboobakur, adding that his client will return to Maldives "as soon as the medical procedures complete".
Sentenced to three years, two months and 12 days over bribery, Qasim was granted a 10-day medical leave on the 6th of September; with him traveling to Singapore the same day. His leave has been extended twice since, with the last extension on September 26th.
Noting that doctors had advised for Qasim to remain in Singapore for three months, his family had requested for his medical leave to extended.
In a letter to the Maldives Correctional Services, a family member noted that he has been asked to stay in Singapore till December "as he has to be closely monitored until his condition stables".
The request was denied, and authorities have surmised that he has fled.
