Ismail Zariyand has delivered a sharp rebuke to former President Mohamed Nasheed, asserting that political loyalty should never come at the expense of national interest. He warned that those who remain silent while the country's sovereignty is compromised will be recorded in history as traitors.
Zariyand made these remarks in response to an article authored by former President Mohamed Nasheed for the online news outlet "Adhadhu," titled "From Nasheed's Pen: Embracing Foreigners, Expanding Maldivian Identity."
He noted that President Nasheed’s writing, the timing of its publication, and the significant historical inaccuracies it contained—particularly the failure to acknowledge the reality of the severe economic hardships and losses the Maldives endured between the 1830s and 1950s—were deeply concerning. He further stated that, in light of these factors, he is now more confident than ever in his current political stance.
Financial expert Zariyand is raising serious concerns regarding the decision to lease a vast area of Ras Male' to Eagle Hills for a period of 99 years. Drawing on his professional expertise and experience, he has been vocal across various platforms, highlighting the potential risks and long-term consequences this deal could pose to the nation. In light of the current situation, Zariyand has also questioned the silence of the country’s former presidents and the prominent religious scholars who claim to be the nation's spiritual leaders.
As we face the alarming threat of losing our religious steadfastness, national sovereignty, and control over our strategic assets, where are the former presidents—Maumoon, Nasheed, Solih, and Dr. Waheed—who continually profess their profound love for the people?Ismail Zariyand
Furthermore, expressing concern over the agreement for the government's Ras Male' project, he questioned who would be held accountable to future generations if Maldivian land falls into the hands of entities alleged to have ties with Zionists (Israel).
Zariyand further stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib will eventually leave office, whether before or after 2028. He remarked that while these leaders might leave the country after benefiting from their positions, the general public does not have that luxury. Consequently, he highlighted that it is the Maldivian citizens and future generations who will have to face the bitter consequences of the state's land allocations and every agreement signed by those in power.
Zariyand stated that history will not only remember the leaders who signed agreements detrimental to the nation as traitors, but will also condemn everyone who remained silent and failed to speak out while the country's sovereignty was being placed at risk.
