Heavy rainfall causes flooding in Malé.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has warned of deteriorating weather conditions across much of the country over the next five days due to the strengthening of the southwest monsoon.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has announced that a strengthening of the southwest monsoon is expected to bring widespread rain across much of the country from Saturday through November 11.
The weather office has stated that widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected across various parts of the Maldives during this period. The authority further warned that heavy downpours could lead to flooding in some islands.
Furthermore, the authority stated that from 10:00 a.m. Saturday to 10:00 a.m. Sunday, winds are expected to prevail from the southwest and west at speeds between 5 and 15 mph, with gusts potentially reaching approximately 35 mph. The agency has also issued a white alert effective until 4:00 p.m. Saturday, covering the area from Haa Alif Atoll to Alif Dhaal Atoll.
The National Meteorological Service has stated that seas are expected to be slight to moderate, becoming occasionally rough during squalls, with wave heights ranging between 2 and 5 feet.
Consequently, the National Meteorological Center has urged all parties to remain attentive to the latest weather updates and to take necessary precautions to mitigate potential damage caused by the adverse weather conditions.
The ongoing severe weather across the Maldives has caused varying degrees of damage to several islands. Widespread flooding has resulted in water entering homes, damaging household appliances, while incidents of power outages and uprooted trees have also been reported.
