Today’s MPs resemble schoolchildren; sittings must be adjourned by 11:00 a.m. just so they can attend classes: Shamheed
4 ނޮވެމްބަރު 2026 | ބުދަ 17:38The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has criticized the government for allegedly stifling parliamentary debate and attempting to silence the public voice. Member of Parliament Shamheed stated that the Economic Minister’s responses during a recent no-confidence motion highlighted a lack of clear government policy, further noting that official statistics confirm a continuous rise in the cost of living.

Dr. Ahmed Shamheed, the Member of Parliament for the South Hulhumale' constituency, has remarked that current lawmakers resemble students, noting that parliamentary proceedings must be halted at 11:00 a.m. every day to allow them to attend classes.
Speaking at a press conference held by the MDP Parliamentary Group on Wednesday, MP Shamheed stated that restricting the opportunity to debate resolutions while time remains in the legislative session is not something any leader, minister, or parliamentarian who supports democracy would endorse.
Furthermore, MP Shamheed stated that the responses provided by Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed during his impeachment proceedings, initiated by the MDP parliamentary group, further demonstrate the current administration's total lack of policy on any given issue.
It is evident that there is no economic policy in place. Regarding the dollar crisis, he claimed today that it does not fall within his mandate. Furthermore, while he denies that prices are rising and insists they are decreasing, the government's own official statistics show that food prices have surged by more than 8 percent this year.Dr. Ahmed Shamheed
MP Shamheed criticized the lack of progress in the People's Majlis, stating that the only thing being accomplished today is the systematic silencing of the people's voice through the parliament.
It is not as if the People's Majlis is currently overwhelmed with a heavy workload; sessions are concluding as early as 9:00 or 10:00 in the morning. It appears to me that the current members are like school children, where the session must be adjourned by 11:00 because they have classes to attend. This is how the Parliament is currently operating.Dr. Ahmed Shamheed
Furthermore, MP Shamheed stated that there are numerous concerns beyond the obstruction of the resolution debate in the People's Majlis.
