Minister Saeed's failure to address six points raised by MDP, opting instead for irrelevant rhetoric, is the primary reason for his loss of confidence: Mauroof
4 ނޮވެމްބަރު 2026 | ބުދަ 10:20Opposition lawmakers have criticized Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed for failing to address specific concerns raised by the MDP during his no-confidence motion, accusing him of providing evasive responses instead. Although the Minister ultimately survived the vote with the Parliament's backing, the MDP maintains that the debate further highlighted the administration's inability to resolve the country's ongoing economic challenges.

Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency, Mauroof Zakir, has stated that Minister of Economic Development, Transport, and Trade Mohamed Saeed failed to address the six specific points raised in the no-confidence motion filed against him by the MDP. Zakir noted that this failure was a result of the Minister resorting to irrelevant rhetoric instead of providing direct answers.
Minister Saeed was summoned to Wednesday's People's Majlis sitting regarding a no-confidence motion filed against him, signed by 13 members of the MDP. During the proceedings, Minister Saeed was allotted one hour to respond to the motion, while an additional hour was granted to members to debate the matter, with the time divided among the political parties.
Responding to the issues raised by the MDP regarding the matter, the Minister focused primarily on the record of the previous MDP administration. Referring to this, Member Mauroof stated during an MDP parliamentary group press conference on Wednesday that the Minister had failed to address any of the specific concerns submitted by the party.
That was the fundamental reason we submitted a motion of no confidence against him. It is our constitutional responsibility to hold the government accountable and to summon and question ministers. We express our concerns and submit these resolutions and summon ministers because they are failing to provide adequate answers to our questions and are unable to deliver the services and information the public demands from government ministries. However, what we witnessed today was the Minister once again attempting to shift the blame onto the previous administration or dismissing the issues as natural occurrences. Instead of addressing the specific matters we raised, the Minister spent an hour engaging in irrelevant rhetoric, failing to provide a rebuttal to our points. Ultimately, the session concluded without him addressing the six specific points we presented, as he chose to focus on unproductive diversions.Mauroof Zakir
Mauroof stated that the overall situation highlights how the dollar shortage remains unresolved, along with other persisting issues that have yet to be addressed.
During the meeting, Vaikaradhoo MP Hussain Ziyad noted that despite the Minister's hour-long address and the subsequent debate between MDP and PNC members, it became evident that no solutions had been reached for any of the issues raised.
What became evident during our allotted nine minutes, as well as throughout the Minister's hour-long debate and the contributions from PNC members, is the significant rise in the value of the dollar and the escalating cost of living.Hussain Ziyad
