The People's Majlis has accepted a bill proposing to increase the mandatory deposit required to appeal tax assessments at the Tax Appeal Tribunal from 25 percent to 50 percent of the disputed amount.
The bill was accepted during Tuesday's sitting and has been forwarded to the Economic Affairs Committee for further review. The amendment to the Tax Administration Act was introduced by Mohamed Mamdhooh, the Member of Parliament for the Funadhoo constituency.
The bill was accepted for consideration with 54 members voting in favor and 11 members voting against. As a government-sponsored piece of legislation, its passage will result in a doubling of the deposit amount currently required for parties filing tax appeals.
Under current tax administration laws, parties seeking to appeal tax assessments determined by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) at the Tax Appeal Tribunal are required to pay a 25 percent deposit of the disputed amount.
However, once this bill is passed, the deposit amount will increase to 50 percent.
