Ibrahim Nazil, the Member of Parliament for the South Hithadhoo constituency, has stated that the current administration's sole purpose for increasing taxes is the reclamation of Ras Male', alleging that the project is being used as a vehicle for corruption.
During Tuesday's parliamentary session, Nazil sharply criticized government policies while debating the proposed amendments to the Tax Administration Act.
Nazil stated that while taxes are being increased every November for the purpose of expanding the budget, these measures provide no tangible benefit to the citizens.
Highlighting the immense hardships currently faced by the Maldivian people, Nazil stated that the lack of essential services, particularly in the islands, is causing significant distress to the public in various ways. He further alleged that instead of fulfilling the basic needs of the citizens, the government is prioritizing the wasteful expenditure of taxpayer money.
Furthermore, Nazil stated that the government's sole purpose for raising taxes is to fund the Ras Male' land reclamation project. He further alleged that the government is using the project as a front for embezzlement.
He stated that while the current administration is increasing taxes and placing a heavier burden on the public's pockets, no efforts are being made to utilize those funds to improve the people's standard of living.
Speaking in Parliament, Nazil further stated that while development projects in islands have come to a standstill and citizens are struggling without access to basic services, the government is gaining undue advantages through activities carried out under the guise of major projects. He characterized the move to increase taxes under such circumstances as a grave injustice against the people.
