The Indian government has stated that it is closely monitoring the situation following the signing of several agreements between the Maldives and Pakistan, including a pact to strengthen bilateral defense cooperation.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs disclosed this information during a press briefing, where spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal was responding to a question from a journalist.
Indian journalists have questioned the Ministry of External Affairs regarding the 20 agreements signed between the Maldives and Pakistan during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's official visit to the country.
As the agreement includes cooperation in the defense sector, inquiries were raised regarding India's defense and foreign policy interests in the matter.
Responding to these queries, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the Indian government is aware of the agreements established between the two countries across various sectors. He further noted that India is closely monitoring these developments with significant importance.
Furthermore, Jaiswal stated that the Indian government remains committed to taking all necessary measures to safeguard regional stability and India's national security. However, he did not elaborate on the specific actions that would be taken.
The agreements established between the Maldives and Pakistan encompass strengthening cooperation in the economic, educational, and cultural sectors, as well as in the field of defense.
India's remarks come at a significant juncture, following a joint official statement by President Muizzu and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. In that statement, the Prime Minister advocated for the establishment of a separate state in Kashmir and warned of potential conflict should "red lines" be crossed regarding the Indus River dispute.
During a joint press conference held following the signing of 20 agreements across various sectors between the two nations, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that his official talks with President Muizzu included extensive discussions on key bilateral interests, as well as a wide range of regional and international issues.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif further stated that he had briefed President Muizzu on Pakistan's principled stance regarding the issue of Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. He reaffirmed that Islamabad remains committed to seeking a peaceful resolution to the dispute in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister expressed Pakistan's profound concern over India's decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) effective April 2025. He emphasized that such a move would constitute a violation of an internationally binding agreement between the two nations.
The Pakistani Prime Minister stated that all parties must understand that any action in violation of this treaty will be regarded as an act of war against Pakistan.
