MDP schedules National Congress elections for November 27

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has officially announced that its National Congress elections will be held on November 27 of this year.

The official announcement was made by the party's Chairperson, Mohamed Nasheed, during the closing ceremony of the "MDP Congress 2026."

This election marks the first since the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) implemented structural changes to its administrative framework, which included the abolition of the positions of Party President and Vice President. Following the removal of these roles, the Chairperson has been designated as the party's highest-ranking official. Under the previous regulations, the President of the Republic held the highest authority within the party whenever it was in power. However, with the newly passed amendments, the Chairperson is now established as the party's top leader, regardless of whether the party is in government or opposition.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) reached several key decisions regarding the extension of its National Congress term during a meeting held on August 31 this year. Out of the 34 members in attendance, a majority of 33 voted in favor of extending the tenure of the current fourth National Council until the end of January next year at the latest.

According to the resolution, the National Council elections must be held within one month of the party's congress. It further stipulates that if the elections cannot be conducted within that timeframe, the current term may be extended until January 31, 2027, at the latest, by which date the elections must be concluded. However, following the conclusion of the congress, the elections have now been officially scheduled to take place on November 27.
