The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has concluded its 5th National Congress, following the passage of several key resolutions.
Held from October 1 to 3 at Thaise Koshi, the congress addressed several key issues concerning party administration and national policy.
Among the key outcomes of the congress was the overwhelming approval of the "Major Shift" policy paper proposed by the party’s former Chairperson and former Economic Minister, Fayyaz Ismail. This proposal seeks to introduce significant amendments to the Constitution and the current system of governance. Endorsed by a total of 520 delegates, the resolution primarily aims to enhance public participation in constitutional matters, the administration, and the legislative process, while simultaneously strengthening the nation's economic resilience.

Furthermore, the congress passed a resolution outlining proposed amendments to the decentralization system. The proposal was introduced during Saturday afternoon's session by Ali Niyaz, Chair of the MDP Decentralization Committee and former Member of Parliament for the Hulhumale' constituency. The resolution was adopted by an overwhelming majority, receiving 560 votes from the 564 delegates in attendance. The document was drafted based on the practical experiences of implementing decentralization in the Maldives to date, as well as research conducted by the Maldives National University and the Local Council Association.

At the same time, significant amendments have been proposed to the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) basic regulation to streamline administrative operations and bolster internal democracy. These amendments, submitted by Fayyaz Ismail, primarily aim to transform the party's internal governance into a more transparent system and increase the engagement of its general membership.
On the sidelines of this congress, a landmark investment forum titled "Rahvehi Tharaggee" was held, marking a first in the Maldives' political history. Spearheaded by MDP Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed, the forum saw 76 proposals submitted by 32 islands across the country. According to the MDP, these represent investment opportunities valued at over USD 300 million. The projects proposed by the local councils encompass a diverse range of initiatives, including poultry farms, day-care centers, and the conservation of ecologically significant sites such as mangroves. Additionally, the proposals include various commercial housing development projects.

According to the MDP, the modern application is designed to provide members with real-time updates on party activities and streamline administrative processes. It also aims to foster stronger connections and facilitate discussions among the membership.
