Nasheed: Those Who Called MDP Policies Anti-Islamic and Unpatriotic Now Embrace Them

MDP Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that those who previously opposed the party now have no choice but to adopt the very policies they once branded as irreligious and unpatriotic, if they are to achieve the prosperity the Maldivian people desire.

Nasheed made these remarks in a post on X. He noted that opponents of the MDP have always sought to portray themselves as the sole guardians of patriotism and staunch upholders of Islamic principles. At the same time, Nasheed stated that these parties consistently attempt to characterize the MDP as an organization that acts against Islamic values and national interests.

In this regard, Nasheed noted that opposition parties have consistently pointed to the MDP’s policies on the sale and privatization of state assets as evidence to portray the party's agenda as detrimental to the nation.

However, Nasheed stated that the reality is that once these individuals come to power, they find no alternative for governing the nation and securing the development and prosperity the Maldivian people desire, other than returning to the very policies they previously characterized as secular or contrary to national interests.

Nasheed further stated that the Maldivian people have always placed their trust in the MDP because it remains the only party that maintains transparency, accountability, and honest policies for the nation.

Nasheed’s remarks come amid growing public concern following the Muizzu administration's decision to lease the Ras Male' project to Eagle Hills for a period of 99 years. While Housing Minister Muththalib has stated that the project was not awarded in exchange for an immediate payment, President Muizzu has characterized the deal as a land lease. The conflicting statements from the two officials have intensified calls on social media for the government to disclose the full details of the project to the public.
