Maldives Reports 76 HIV Cases, 52 Currently Living with Virus

Health Minister Geela Ali has stated that a total of 76 cases of HIV have been reported in the Maldives to date, with 52 of those individuals currently living with the virus.

Speaking on a TV program, Minister Geela stated that the first case of HIV in the Maldives was diagnosed in 1991, noting that the discovery triggered significant public concern and widespread fear at the time.

However, Minister Geela stated that the government has since successfully raised public awareness about the disease and established the necessary treatment facilities and resources. The Minister further noted that as a result of these efforts, the public is now well-informed about the transmission of the disease and the global advancements made in its treatment.

Furthermore, Minister Geela stated that treatment for patients, as well as counseling and other essential support for their families, is being provided through a well-coordinated special government program. Minister Geela also emphasized that these services are being delivered with the highest level of confidentiality regarding the personal information of both the patients and their families.

Our records indicate that a total of 76 individuals have been reported to have contracted HIV in the Maldives to date. However, there are currently 52 people living with the virus. This is a highly structured initiative managed by the state, through which specialized programs provide essential medical treatment, family counseling, and various other forms of support to those affected.

Minister Geela noted that HIV has not spread in the Maldives to the extent seen in other countries. She highlighted that the causes behind each patient's infection are being identified, and services are being provided based on comprehensive data collection at that level. The Minister further stated that proactive and well-coordinated efforts are being undertaken within the public health sector to address the issue.
