Land allocated in Male' for construction of a dedicated building for Supreme Court: Chief Justice

Highlighting ongoing efforts to resolve space constraints within the judiciary, the Chief Justice noted that work on the Male' Court Complex is proceeding with the ultimate goal of expediting legal proceedings and ensuring the delivery of justice for all citizens.

Chief Justice Ahmed Abdul Ghanee Mohamed has announced that a plot of land has been allocated in a prime location in Male' for the construction of a dedicated building for the Supreme Court, the highest judicial authority in the Maldives.
The Chief Justice made these remarks while speaking at a special ceremony held to commemorate the 18th anniversary of the establishment of the Supreme Court under the new Constitution.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Justice announced that a plot of land in Male' was officially allocated on September 8th this year for the construction of the new Supreme Court building. He noted that securing a site in one of Male's most prime locations has renewed hopes for the Supreme Court to have its own dedicated premises. He further expressed his expectation that construction work on the building will commence in the very near future.
Highlighting ongoing efforts to find a permanent solution to the space constraints facing the courts, the Chief Justice stated that the contract for the construction of the Male' Court Complex was awarded to MTCC on July 25th of this year. He further noted that the complex is expected to be operational and ready to host judicial proceedings by the start of the 2028 legal year.
Speaking on the justice system, the Chief Justice highlighted that the fundamental purpose of the courts is to deliver justice to the citizens. He stated that ensuring the delivery of justice at a reasonable speed is currently the greatest responsibility.
To achieve this objective, he further disclosed that efforts are currently underway to identify and eliminate the underlying causes behind the backlog of cases pending for over a year in all courts across the Maldives.
The Chief Justice concluded his remarks by calling upon the justices and staff of the Supreme Court to remain united in upholding the Constitution and the rule of law, and in their commitment to building a fair and just legal system.
Securing a dedicated building for the Supreme Court is a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to strengthen the Maldivian judiciary.
