Immigration Reverses Deportation Action Against Expatriate After Legal Challenge

A Thai national has withdrawn a lawsuit filed in Civil Court against Maldives Immigration, which alleged that the agency had unlawfully decided to deport them while depriving them of their fundamental rights. The withdrawal follows the decision by Maldives Immigration to rescind the enforcement actions previously taken against the individual.

This case was filed following his arrest during an immigration raid and the subsequent decision to deport him from the Maldives.

The foreign national who filed the case stated that he was taken into custody following a raid conducted by Immigration authorities without a court order. He further alleged that he was detained despite not having committed any offense and while holding a valid permit to remain in the Maldives.

The lawsuit contends that the measures taken by Immigration to detain and deport him were not carried out in accordance with the law.

Furthermore, the case states that Immigration officials recorded his statement in the absence of his sponsor and without the assistance of a translator. He also asserted that these actions deprived him of his fundamental legal rights.

While the case was ongoing in Civil Court, the plaintiff requested to withdraw the lawsuit. He stated that the reason for the withdrawal was that the measures previously taken against him by Immigration have now been rescinded. Furthermore, he informed the court that since his freedoms have been restored, he no longer wishes to pursue the matter at this time.

The authorities have not officially disclosed the reasons for overturning the measures previously taken by Immigration in relation to this case.
