MDP Stalled Because Others Are Discussing Presidential Bids Besides President Nasheed: Ahmed Haleem

Former Member of Parliament for the Bilehdhoo constituency, Ahmed Haleem, has stated that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has stalled because there are discussions regarding candidates other than President Nasheed contesting the presidential election.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program, Haleem stated that during the MDP chairperson election, President Nasheed appeared to be campaigning as if it were a presidential race. Haleem further noted that the general membership of the MDP expressed a collective desire to embark on a fresh start alongside President Nasheed.

However, Haleem stated that the rhetoric President Nasheed adopted following his victory in the chairperson election caused widespread disillusionment, leading people to gradually distance themselves from the movement.

In the beginning, people turned out in high spirits when calls were made to join the protests following the initial election victory. However, as President Nasheed began to step back and hint at withdrawing from the presidential race, the hopes of many general members gradually started to fade.

Haleem stated that the public is increasingly questioning whether President Nasheed will contest the election, showing more interest in his potential candidacy than in the individuals who have already expressed interest in the MDP presidential ticket.

Furthermore, Haleem highlighted that internal activities have significantly increased since President Nasheed took charge of the party. He noted that despite various challenges posed by the government, the MDP will convene its congress very soon.
