While the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) claims the work is stalled due to pending permits, the council warns that the encroaching shoreline now poses a significant threat to residential areas.

The Hithaadhoo Island Council has called on the government to provide an urgent solution to the island's severe coastal erosion, as the issue increasingly threatens residential areas.
Coastal protection and land reclamation to address the erosion issues in Hithaadhoo are key pledges made by the current administration.
Speaking to RaajjeMV regarding the issue, the Hithadhoo Council stated that the island is currently experiencing rapid erosion in areas very close to residential neighborhoods.
The council stated that due to fears that this situation could lead to damage to the island's infrastructure and private property, they formally brought the matter to the attention of the Ministry of Housing via a letter in May this year, shortly after the new council took office.
Furthermore, the council has provided all the necessary information requested by the Ministry to facilitate the project's implementation. During a visit to Male' last July, council officials met with senior representatives from the Ministry of Housing and the project contractor, MTCC, for further discussions. During that meeting, MTCC stated that the delay in commencing the work was due to pending approvals from the Ministry.
However, the Ministry of Housing had assured the Council at the time that the project would commence shortly. The Council further noted that when they contacted the Ministry in August for a progress update, they were informed that physical work on the project would begin within two weeks.
However, as several days have passed since the deadline without any physical work commencing, concerns have grown among the island's residents.
The Hithadhoo Island Council has urged the government to fulfill its pledge and expedite the completion of the island's coastal protection project to prevent further land loss. As severe erosion remains one of the most significant challenges facing the residents of Hithadhoo, the council is calling for urgent government intervention to address the issue.
