Hithaadhoo Health Center Construction Yet to Begin a Year After Contract Award

The Hithaadhoo Island Council has expressed concern over the lack of progress on the new health center building, noting that physical work has yet to commence a year after the project was awarded to Fenaka Corporation.

Expressing concern in an interview with RaajjeTV, Shamia Abdul Latheef, Vice President of the B. Hithaadhoo Island Council, stated that the expansion of the Hithaadhoo Health Center with a new building was a pledge made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during the 2023 presidential election campaign.

Shamia stated that during President Muizzu's visit to Hithaadhoo on August 22, 2025, an agreement was signed to award the construction of the new health center building to Fenaka Corporation. However, she noted that no work has been carried out on the project to date.

Shamia stated that this project is of great significance to Hithaadhoo.

The current facility housing this center is an aging structure originally built by the community in the 1980s to serve as a school. The building has now deteriorated significantly, reaching a state where it is nearly unusable. It currently faces issues such as roof leaks, and operations are only continuing through minor, makeshift repairs.

Shamia stated that although Health Ministry officials indicated the project would commence in September 2026 during a progress update meeting, there is currently no visible evidence or hope of it moving forward.

Furthermore, Shamia stated that the council has not hindered the government in any way regarding the implementation of this project and noted that the land for the new building has already been handed over.
