The Hithaadhoo Island Council has expressed concern over the suspension of a crucial land reclamation project in Baa Atoll.
This project was a pledge originally scheduled to commence in August of last year. During a visit to the island at that time, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu committed to initiating the work. However, the government was only able to begin the project in April of this year.
According to information shared by the Hithaadhoo Council with RaajjeTV, the project commenced just four days prior to the Local Council Elections. However, work came to a standstill immediately following the government's defeat in the polls. The project remained active for a duration of only about five days.
When questioned regarding the reasons behind the project's suspension, MTCC stated that work has been halted due to the pending Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). An EIA is a formal report conducted to identify and evaluate the potential environmental consequences of a project.
The Hithaadhoo Council highlighted that this project is of immediate importance to the residents. Land reclamation in the island has been a long-standing demand of the community.
As the project fails to meet its promised completion, public concern continues to grow. The delays in commencement and the subsequent suspension of work have further intensified the anxieties of the local community.
