The former President of the MDP, Abdulla Shahid, has stated that the Maldives' tourism industry is on the verge of falling into a deep abyss due to the government's inconsistent and flawed policy changes.
Shahid made these remarks in a post on X on Thursday.
Shahid emphasized that any sudden changes implemented by the government without prior consultation with tourism industry stakeholders will inevitably lead to adverse consequences in the future.
Shahid has called on the government to abandon its current uncompromising stance. He further urged the administration to engage in dialogue with tourism industry stakeholders and to heed their concerns.
Furthermore, Shahid repeatedly urged the government to take immediate action to safeguard the Maldives' tourism industry.
Shahid’s call comes as Mohamed Khaleel, CEO of Manta Air and former Tourism Advisor to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, also highlighted that a country where laws and regulations are amended and enforced within 24 hours offers no security for investments. He noted that such actions would lead to a complete loss of investor confidence.
Industry experts have expressed significant concerns regarding the potential impact of the new foreign exchange regulations on resorts, airlines, and other tourism-related businesses operating in the Maldives.
