Only MDP Government Has Delivered Development Projects in Fulhadhoo: Council Member

4 ސެޕްޓެމްބަރު 2026 | ހުކުރު 08:49

Despite the rapid growth of tourism in B. Fulhadhoo, residents continue to face significant challenges due to the lack of essential services such as water and sewerage systems, according to a local council member. Expressing concern over government efforts to bring tourism-designated land under central control, the councilor further noted that the current administration has failed to undertake adequate development projects for the island, despite its substantial contribution to state revenue.

B. Fulhadhoo Council Member Hassaan Abdulla has stated that all previous development projects on the island were carried out during the MDP administration, asserting that the current government is not undertaking any work for the island's development.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fashaairu" program on Friday, Hassaan stated that no development projects have been carried out in Fulhadhoo since the current administration took office. He noted that the only visible progress is the work on the island's mosque, which commenced just a month and a half ago.

Highlighting the developmental progress of Fulhadhoo, Hassaan noted that while the island previously lacked a harbor, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration has since completed the construction of one. However, he emphasized that the absence of a water and sewerage system remains the most significant challenge for the island, causing substantial difficulties for its residents.

Highlighting Fulhadhoo as a burgeoning destination with a rapidly developing tourism sector, Hassaan noted that the island is currently served by seaplane flights twice a week, in addition to regular speedboat ferry services. With a total population of 421 residents, the island already hosts 23 operational guesthouses, while work is underway to open an additional 15 properties, he added.

He further stated that the council's objective is to minimize concrete development and ensure Fulhadhoo remains as lush and green as possible.

The government recently requested the council to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to transfer the jurisdiction of tourism-designated land in Fuladhoo to the Ministry. However, Council President Hassaan stated that the council has decided not to sign the agreement.

He further stated that Fulhadhoo is a destination where land value is high, and noted that such government decisions would have a detrimental impact on the island's tourism industry.

Furthermore, Hassaan expressed concern that while Fulhadhoo contributes millions in Green Tax to the state, none of those funds are being utilized for the island's environmental preservation or development.

He noted that Fulhadhoo is a popular destination frequented by a significant number of locals as well as international tourists.
