Government has effectively paralyzed Constitution; it now lies dormant on the President's desk: Rasheed

Former Member of Parliament for the Central Maafannu constituency, Ibrahim Rasheed (Bonda), has stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration has "paralyzed" the Constitution.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program, Rasheed stated that the current administration is conducting all its affairs outside the bounds of the law. He further alleged that the government has undermined legal authority to facilitate the widespread misappropriation of public funds.

Rasheed stated that the most significant waste of public funds by the government occurs under the guise of infrastructure development. He noted that while equipment and materials are frequently imported for various projects, they are often left unused and allowed to deteriorate, a sight he claims is visible on every island.

How can they bring in engines and equipment, execute government projects, and then refuse to pay billions in outstanding dues? The government is essentially operating on the money taken directly from the pockets of ordinary citizens. Despite taking these funds and incurring such massive expenses, no actual progress is being made. Negligence is visible in every direction. State assets are being left to decay and deteriorate across the country. The Constitution has been rendered lifeless. There is a solution to all of this, which is to revive the Constitution. However, it cannot be revived because it has been incapacitated and left dormant on a desk in the President's Office.

Furthermore, Rasheed stated that despite state expenditures reaching extreme levels, the current administration has yet to make any effort to restructure spending. He further noted that although various major international financial institutions have repeatedly advised and warned the government to restructure the economy and its expenditures, these warnings continue to fall on deaf ears.

In his remarks, Rasheed highlighted that state-owned enterprises owe 3.5 billion Rufiyaa in unpaid taxes to MIRA, further noting that several ministries and state institutions have also failed to settle their electricity and water bills. He criticized the government for its lack of fairness, pointing out that while state entities are permitted such lapses, ordinary citizens are afforded no such leniency in similar matters.
