President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Maldives will donate 1 million Maldivian Rufiyaa ($64,735) to the Nepalese Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund to support humanitarian efforts following the devastating floods and landslides that struck Nepal on August 26, 2026. This contribution comes as neighboring Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have each pledged $1 million in aid to assist Nepal’s recovery.
The President's Office stated that the $65,000 donation from the Maldives symbolizes the priority the nation accords to regional solidarity. It further noted that the contribution reflects the Maldives' commitment to standing in empathy and support with fellow nations during times of crisis.
South Asian nations have extended significant assistance to Nepal following the devastating disaster that resulted in numerous fatalities and widespread destruction. The Sri Lankan government has pledged $1 million in aid, while India has dispatched 70 tonnes of relief supplies along with specialized rescue teams to assist in the operations. Additionally, Bangladesh has contributed $1 million in financial aid to support Nepal's recovery efforts.
Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1980, the two South Asian nations of Maldives and Nepal have maintained a close and cordial relationship.
