The Criminal Court has ordered the release of Ahmed Maimoon Mohamed, Vice President of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) youth wing, following his arrest during a recent protest.
The Criminal Court issued the order on Sunday after Maimoon was produced before the court for a remand hearing. While the police requested a 15-day extension of his detention, the court ordered his release under specific conditions.
Police arrested Maimoon late last Monday night. The arrest follows an incident during an MDP rally in Male' on Friday night, where he was accused of obstructing police duties, inciting unrest, and breaching police barricades to enter a restricted zone.
Five days after Maimoon's arrest, police produced him before the court on Sunday for a remand hearing. During the proceedings, the police also requested a court order to prohibit him from participating in further protests. However, the court declined to issue such an order.
Police have previously arrested Maimoon on several occasions. Most recently, he was taken into custody during an MDP protest in April of this year. However, he was released after being produced before the court for a remand hearing.
