HRCM launches probe into complaint filed by MDP regarding dissolution of Hirimaradhoo Island Council

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has launched an investigation into a complaint filed by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) regarding the dissolution of the H.A. Hirimaradhoo Council. The complaint alleges that the decision to declare the island uninhabited and dissolve its local government council was carried out in violation of the Decentralization Act.
In a letter sent to the MDP on Tuesday, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) stated that it is currently investigating the case submitted by the party and will provide a response as soon as the inquiry is concluded.
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has expressed deep concern over the decision to depopulate the island of Hirimaradhoo. The party stated that designating Hirimaradhoo as an uninhabited island and dissolving its local council would cause significant harm to the 305 residents currently living there. The MDP further noted that this move would subject the island's population to numerous economic and social hardships.
The MDP has stated that the government reached this decision to serve the illicit political interests of the ruling PNC. The party further asserted that it will take all necessary measures to bring an end to these oppressive actions.
