Former President of the MDP, Dr. Ibrahim Didi, has stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu exhibits all the characteristics of an authoritarian leader.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program, Didi stated that President Muizzu’s mindset is defined by authoritarian characteristics reminiscent of a monarchy.
Noting that President Muizzu is consolidating all powers within his office, Didi stated that the President first seized control of the People’s Majlis before moving to dominate the judiciary by restructuring the Supreme Court. Didi further highlighted that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has yet to question the dismissed Supreme Court justices regarding the allegations leveled against them to this day.
As the elders say, a foundation laid crooked will remain crooked even if it reaches the stars. We are seeing every step being taken in that same crooked direction. Look at how he came to power—by displaying an empty pink chair. He secured the ticket by deceiving the very members of the PPM to whom that chair belonged, through whatever means he and Abdul Raheem orchestrated.Dr. Ibrahim Didi (DD)
Didi stated that President Muizzu continues to vent his frustrations on the Maldivian people following the government's significant defeat in the recent elections. Furthermore, Didi noted that the President is pushing for legislative amendments aimed at stripping local councils of their autonomy, ensuring they cannot exercise any authority except through the President's Office.
However, Didi stated that regardless of how much power President Muizzu consolidates or his attempts to coerce civil servants into joining the PNC, he will not be able to secure victory in the 2028 presidential election.
Furthermore, Didi stated that the current administration's policies are inconsistent and that the government has done nothing but deceive and mislead the public.
