During the peaceful demonstration, which was obstructed by the police, the opposition party specifically criticized changes to the decentralization system and called on the administration to address the ongoing economic hardships facing the public.

The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has staged a protest in front of its main party hub.
During an emergency demonstration held on Friday night, members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) voiced strong criticism against the current administration's policies. Protesters highlighted the severe economic hardships facing the public, specifically citing the rising cost of living and the critical shortage of essential medicines.
Furthermore, protesters voiced their opposition to the legislative changes being pushed through the People's Majlis—where the PNC holds a supermajority—and condemned the government for allegedly misleading the public.
Although the MDP conducted its protest peacefully, police cordoned off the entire area with barricades, effectively trapping the participants and preventing them from leaving the premises.
A growing number of citizens are expressing concern that President Muizzu’s administration is imposing widespread restrictions across various sectors. Many also allege that the government is working to undermine the decentralization system by introducing significant legislative changes aimed at curtailing the powers of local councillors. Major amendments have already been made to the Decentralization Act, resulting in the dissolution of atoll councils. Furthermore, measures have been implemented that effectively obstruct councils from functioning during the final term of their tenure.
The MDP has recently held protests regarding this issue. Additionally, the party has staged demonstrations under the slogan 'Dhathivejje' to voice concerns over the rising cost of living and the deteriorating economic conditions of the public.
