Maldives derailed due to legislative amendments being introduced by the Muizzu administration: Nishan

Legal expert Mohamed Nishan Ibrahim has stated that the Maldives has been led astray due to the legislative amendments being introduced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program, Nishan stated that there are specific procedures and principles that must be followed when enacting laws. He noted that since President Muizzu assumed office, the implementation of new legislation has been characterized by "contradictions" and "procedural hurdles."

Nishan stated that the public is finding it difficult to comply with or accept several recent legislative changes. These include laws aimed at silencing members, regulations to control the media, amendments regarding the appointment of chairpersons and vice-chairpersons to independent institutions, and the mandatory dollar conversion policy.

The reason the public is struggling to comply with the extensive and complex legislative changes introduced by President Muizzu is due to a fundamental disconnect. Since he took office, there has been a clear sense of public friction and resistance toward following these new laws. The difficulty in adhering to the changes President Muizzu is implementing across the nation’s laws, regulations, and policies stems from the fact that the established procedures and protocols—or the necessary framework for implementation—fall outside the bounds of acceptable norms.

Noting that a law only holds its authority if the public adheres to it, Nishan stated that citizens will not comply with a law unless they are assured of the protection it provides. He further remarked that this is precisely the issue currently facing the Maldives.

Nishan stated that the Maldives has veered off course due to the introduction of laws that are both unbearable for the public and difficult to implement.
