Waking up in a Maldives born only yesterday

Taking a hard look at the contemporary Maldivian political scene leaves one with the bizarre sensation that our entire society emerged from a vacuum just yesterday.

The rhetoric flowing from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, combined with the daily operational theater of his government, constantly generates the illusion that foundational human survival needs, nourishment and clean water, phenomenally flickered into existence only under his watch.

Among the most obvious spectacles witnessed right now is this relentless drive to repackage age-old public utilities and entrenched institutions as cutting-edge breakthroughs.

Reinventing wheels that are already rolling

Eyebrows shot up across the country during Monday’s presidential bill-signing ceremony, leaving many bewildered over statements delivered directly from the executive seat.

The declarations regarding inbound visitors particularly turned heads. The administration declared that in 30 days, an official mechanism would be erected to log travelers from arrival, monitor their internal transit and accommodation spots, right through to their departure.

Turning tourists into subjects of continuous monitoring and trampling their personal boundaries surely risks spoiling the entire visitor journey.

However, the real absurdity lies in the fact that immigration officials and tourism authorities have operated a collaborative tracking framework for ages.

Disregarding that reality completely, the official messaging framed the scheme as an extraordinary novelty never before seen on our shores.

Rewriting history for cheap political points

The grandstanding did not stop at border controls. National Day speeches witnessed another performance centered on faith and legislation. The leadership announced that a fortified, unified mechanism would be instituted to prevent any law conflicting with Islamic teachings from ever being drafted, pledging to place this framework before the legislative body during its upcoming third sitting of the calendar year.

Strip away the staged delivery, and this exact mandate has been an explicit cornerstone deeply anchored in legal reality ever since the 2008 Green Constitution took effect.

Meanwhile, grand warnings insisting that any drifting toward unfamiliar policies jeopardizes sovereignty feel like hollow political noise. These claims simply erase the long-standing reality of our religious harmony and historical independence, all to score immediate political leverage.

Rebranding the past while shelving pledges

Watching these episodes unfold evokes the image of fresh arrivals stumbling into existence and trying to rebuild civilization from square one.

Rather than delivering on the monumental commitments made to the public, the current strategy visibly burns valuable time on these diversions while disorienting everyday people.

Tune in to the official storyline, and you would believe you are walking the streets of a country newly founded on an empty canvas. If this pattern of behavior remains unchecked, it is entirely reasonable to anticipate that long lists of achievements built by predecessors will be hijacked and paraded as original triumphs.

Questionable legacy of borrowed glory

Attempting to swipe earlier achievements the moment power changes hands is a brand of politics that earns very little dignity in historical accounts.

However, these recurring incidents shine an unflattering spotlight on a governing approach determined to claim individual authorship for extensive milestones wrapped up by prior regimes.

One cannot help but interrogate such performances. Did the Maldivian nation genuinely materialize overnight? Did human existence here begin on the day Muizzu assumed the presidency? Was the past a total vacuum?

It truly feels at times as though we just arrived on earth.

Did taps run dry and generators sit cold until Muizzu arrived to power them?

Surely, this performance is stretching credibility beyond all reasonable limits.
